The delightful northern Thai town of Lampang

The 35th SEANET convention will take place in Thailand's fourth-largest city, the northern town of Lampang from November 8 until November 11, 2007 and should provide delegates with a rare opportunity to see unspoilt Northern Thai (Lanna) culture.

Some two hundred years older than the better-known Chiang Mai and dating back to the 11th Century, Lampang is a centre for teak forests, ceramics, has the world's first elephant hospital and training centre and is also known for its horse-drawn transport.

The Radio Amateur Society of Thailand under the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King (RAST), host of SEANET 2007, is arranging a special "e-wedding" or wedding on elephant-back on Friday November 9, providing an opportunity for delegates to marry or remarry in a traditional elephant-back ceremony.

A sight-seeing tour including a visit to a ceramic factory will be offered as an alternative activity on that day and that evening there will be a Kan Toke traditional northern-style dinner with entertainment.
On the Saturday there will be a tour of the nearby Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand's lignite power generating plant as well as shopping opportunities and a chance to tour Lampang by horse-drawn cart.

The grand gala banquet dinner will take place on Saturday evening (November 10) at the Wienglakor Hotel (www.wienglakor.com) while the plenary (technical) session takes place on Sunday, which will include a special track on activities in Thailand about the role of amateur radio in disaster communications since the tsunami disaster in December 2004. The farewell luncheon will follows this morning session, which ends with a vote for venue for the 2008 Seanet convention.
 

Officers of RAST were convinced by the enthusiasm of radio hams in Lampang to be hosts this year while the deputy governor of the province travelled down to Bangkok in late 2006 to seek the society's endorsement of Lampang as the venue. The offer to host the convention had been made in Bangalore, India, two years previously.
Chairman of the SEANET organising committee is the immediate past president of RAST, Mrs Mayuree Chotikul, HS1YL, who is working with RAST President Chaiyong Wongwuticomjon, HS1QVD, and other committee members to ensure that the 35th annual SEANET convention will be a memorable event.
 

RAST will make all arrangements for shopping, golf and sightseeing tours as well as helping to organise any side-trips, such as to the northern capital of Chiang Mai, about one hour away by car.
Lampang has a domestic airport, while some delegates may find it more convenient to fly to Chiang Mai and then to travel the last 93 kilometres by road and RAST will keep delegates abreast with information about how best to travel to and from Lampang at this web site.
