Browsing the State Wide Web (SWW)
The purpose of this chapter
is to provide you with the necessary skill that required in browsing the State
Wide Web (SWW) using Internet Explorer or in short-form known as IE. Internet Explorer
makes it easier to get the most from the Web, whether you are searching for new
information or browsing your favorite Web sites. And built-in IntelliSense
technology can save you time completing routine Web tasks, such as
automatically completing Web addresses and forms for you, and automatically
detecting your network and connection status.
1.1 About the Internet Explorer’s (IE) Browser
Window
The Internet Explorer’s
browser window displays a homepage, the page you see each time you start
Internet Explorer. In most cases, the first time you use Internet Explorer,
your home page has been chosen for you. One common home page is the msn.com
home page (http://www.msn.com/). However, you could change the default homepage
to your own preferences. The default homepage for Sabah.Net user is http://www.sabah.gov.my. In the following example, the
default homepage has been set to http://sww.sabah.gov.my/. To
do so, please refer to Section 1.12,.Change Setting for Default Page

Like an address, URL
(Uniform Resource Locator) tells Internet Explorer where to find the specific
page (an address for W Internet). URL untuk laman Intranet Sabah.Net ialah http://sww.sabah.gov.my, manakala
laman Internet ialah http://www.sabah.net.my/
1.3 Connecting to other components through Internet Explorer
From
the Internet Explorer’s window, you can get connected directly to your mail
client, this is including sending and receiving your email, or sending a Link
(URL) and a Page that you’re currently viewed.
Step
1: Launch your Internet Explorer (IE).
Step
2: Click this mail button on your Internet Explorer’s ‘Standard Buttons’ and you will be able
to see a list of menu, as shown below:

Note:
Before using any of the components for this Internet service, first you have to
do a configurations for the Windows (please refer to section 1.4 for more
information)
1.4 Creating Windows Configuration for Internet
service
Step 1: On your Internet Explorer
toolbars, click on Tools. Then choose Internet Options, and you
will see the following window:

Step 2: Go to Programs, and from
there you can specify which program Windows automatically uses for each
Internet service.
1.5 Viewing other pages
To
view other pages,
Like
Netscape, Internet Explorer also allowed you to mark the page that you often
visit or like (also called or known as Favorites in IE terms). Unlike the history list, which will
gets discarded after a period of time, the Favorites list stay until you removed
it.
Step
1: Go to the page that you want to keep in your Favorites list.
Step 2: Click Favorites button and choose Add to Favorites to display the
favorites menu (as shown in Figure 1.4)

Step 3: Choose the
folder that you want to use to save the page, then click OK

From
the Favorites list, choose the page that you want to visit.
1.9 Organizing your
Favorite pages to folder
As your
list of favorite pages grows, you can keep it organized by creating folders.
You might want to organize your pages by topic. For example, you could create a
folder named Art for storing information about art exhibits and reviews.
Step 1: On the Favorites menu,
click Organize Favorites.
Step 2: Click Create Folder,
type a name for the folder, and then press ENTER.
Step 3: Drag the shortcuts (or
folders) in the list to the appropriate folders.
If the
number of shortcuts or folders makes dragging impractical, you can use the Move
to Folder button instead
.

Making Pages available Offline
When you make a Web page available
offline, you can read its content when your computer is not connected to the
Internet. For example, you can view Web pages on your laptop computer when you
don't have a network or Internet connection
You can specify how much content you
want available, such as just a page or a page and all its links, and choose how
you want to update that content on your computer. If you just want to view a
Web page offline, and you don't need to update the content, you can save the
page on your computer. There are several ways you can save the Web page, from
just saving the text to saving all of the images and text needed to display
that page as it appears on the Web.

Making the current Web page available offline
Step 1: On the Favorites
menu, click Add to Favorites.
Step 2: Select the Make available
offline check box.
Note: To specify a schedule for updating
that page, and how much content to download, click Customize and follow
the instructions on your screen
1.10.2 Make
an exsiting Favorite item available offline
Step 1: On the Favorites
menu, click Organize Favorites.
Step 2: Klik
Click the page you want to make available offline
Step 3: Select the Make available
offline check box.
Step 4: To specify a schedule for
updating that page, and how much content to download, click Properties.
Note: Before you go offline, make
sure you have the latest version of your pages by clicking the Tools
menu and then clicking Synchronize.
You can also make Web
pages available offline without adding them to your Favorites list, by saving
the pages on your computer (please refer to section 1.10.3 for details).
1.10.3 To
save a Web page on your computer
Step 1: On the File menu,
click Save As.
Step 2: Double-click the folder you
want to save the page in.
Step 3: In the File name box,
type a name for the page.
Step 4: In the Save as type
box, select a file type.
Step 5: Do one of the following:
1.11 Changing the
default setting
Whenever
you start the Internet Explorer, a default page will be downloaded
automatically by the browser. You can actually set your favorite web page as
your default page.
Step 1: Go to the page
that you want to set as your default home page. For Sabah.Net, it is recommended
that you go to http://www.sabah.net.my.
Step 2: From the Tools menu, choose Internet Options.
Step 3: Please type your
favorite URL in the Address box (see
Figure 1.3).
Step 4: Then click the Use
Default button.
Step
1: Go to the web page that you want to print.
Step
2: From the File menu choose Print, or you can click the print
button on your ‘Standard
Buttons’ bar.
Step 3: In the Print
windows, click the Print button.
