Community Organising Training |
| The 24-month training is for selected members of community organisations and aims to build and enhance the capacity of the organisations to handle issues affecting them in a holistic manner. The issues are concretised into actions or projects that will be carried out and managed by the organisers together with the community organisation, with support from PACOS. |
| |
Socio-Economic Development |
| Depending on the type of issues faced by the community organisations, the training and support is tailor-made to enable communities to initiate projects for the sustenance of the organisation and to achieve self-reliance and independence. The general concepts and principles of indigenous economic development are also built into a module under the Community Organising Training Programme. |
| |
Resource Management |
| This programme aims to enhance the capacity of communities to manage their resources in a sustainable way using their own traditional resource management systems such as “Tagal”. To aid in the management of their resources, community resource maps are prepared by communities themselves with support from PACOS. Construction of gravity water supplies and installation of micro-hydroelectricity contributes towards conservation of watersheds apart from improving the standard of living of communities. |
| |
Land Rights |
| The Native Customary Rights (NCR) provided for in the Sabah Land Ordinance of 1930 provides for individual and communal land titles to customary lands. This programme assists communities in asserting their rights over the ownership of their traditional lands through systematic documentation and research of their settlement histories. |
| |
Community Education |
| Basic and advanced training are given to indigenous preschool teachers so that they can run their community preschools in a manner that allows the child to be educated in the modern way and yet be rooted in his or her indigenous roots. A curriculum focussing on the indigenous learning concept is constantly being refined to suit the needs and aspirations of communities. Community involvement is part and parcel of PACOS’s Early Child Care and Development (ECCD) training and support. |
| |
Adat and Culture |
| This programme aims at revitalising relevant positive beliefs, adat (custom) and cultures of indigenous communities that can strengthen their identity enhance their dignity and contribute to their holistic and balanced development. |
| |
Other Activities |
| PACOS is also involved in public awareness activities on a wide range of issues, particularly related to the recognition of indigenous people's rights, bio-piracy, gender, health, environment, sustainable development and rural development. |
